American Royal Announces Inductees for Barbecue Hall of Fame®
Public Invited to Induction Ceremony on Saturday, October 5th,
at World Series of Barbecue® Championship
(Kansas City, MO) – The American Royal Association today announced the 2013 class of inductees to the Barbecue Hall of Fame: Adam Perry Lang, George Stephen Sr., and Myron Mixon. The formal induction ceremony will take place on the main stage of the World Series of Barbecue® Championship event at the American Royal Complex on Saturday, October 5th at 7:00 pm.
Each year, three individuals are awarded the prestigious honor and are recognized by the Barbecue Hall of Fame for their significant contributions to the barbecue community and demonstration of achievement in barbecue excellence in one of three categories: Pitmaster, Business/Industry, and Celebrity/Humanitarian.
This year, the Barbecue Hall of Fame will welcome the following inductees:
Pitmaster Category: Myron Mixon
Myron Mixon, Chief cook of the Jack’s Old South Competition Bar-B-Que Team, won first place in his first barbecue contest and has been taking home the top trophies ever since. From the beginning of his barbecue career in 1996, Myron has won over 200 grand championships resulting in over 1900 total trophies, over 40 state championships, and 11 national championships.
Myron’s unmatched winning pitmaster record has earned him the nickname of the “winningest man in barbecue” and his competition accolades include three Grand Champion titles at the World Championship in Memphis three times, three first place wins for Whole Hog category at the Jack Daniels World Championship Invitational Barbeque Competition, and Myron’s team is the only team to earn Grand Championships in the Memphis in May, Kansas City Barbeque Society, and Florida BBQ Association in the same year. He is well-known among pitmasters on the competition barbecue circuit and to other barbecuers who tune-in to watch him as judge pitmasters on Destination America’s hit TV show “BBQ Pitmasters”.
Business/Industry Category: George Stephen, Sr.
Several decades before there was a George Foreman grill, there was another innovative barbecuing enthusiast named George Stephen Sr. who made grills for the everyday household. In the late 1800’s, a metal works factory worker named George Stephen Sr. used two sheet metal half-spheres originally designed as parts for buoys to make his homemade grill, which George referred to as “George’s Barbecue Kettle”.
George began selling his invention in 1952 and then formed the barbecue division of the Weber Brothers Metal Works factory, which he ultimately bought out, became sole owner of, and devoted his career to manufacturing and selling what we know today as the Weber Kettle.
George Stephen Sr. passed away in 1993 at the age of 71. Yet, his commitment to quality and his love for the perfect grilling experience have a strong presence at Weber’s corporate headquarters and manufacturing facility in Palatine, Illinois. Today, Weber-Stephen Product Company remains a family-owned business is the world’s leading manufacturer of barbecue grills, smokers, grilling accessories, and other outdoor room products. As a leading exporter of grills, Weber brand products are sold worldwide at select home centers, hardware stores, department stores, patio stores, and other retail outlets.
Celebrity/Humanitarian Category: Adam Perry Lang
Adam Perry Lang, a “meat maestro,” has barbecue and grilling experience from the backyard barbecue grill to the professional kitchen. In the culinary industry, Adam is widely known as the man who masters the art of cooking over fire. According to famed chef, restaurateur, and beloved Iron Chef America celebrity Mario Batali, Adam is his “go-to-brother for meat and fire.”
Adam is serious about expanding the realms of barbecue and sharing his passion with the world, as evidenced from his best-selling books Serious Barbecue, of which the second edition was released in August, BBQ 25, and Charred and Scruffed. Adam is a consulting partner in Chef Mario Batali’s Carnevino in Las Vegas, and is well-known for founding Daisy May’s BBQ in New York and London’s Barbecoa with Chef Jamie Oliver.
He recently moved to Southern California and introduced the Los Angeles community to his signature style of outdoor cooking at the Back Lot BBQ in the heart of Hollywood. In addition to serving up barbecue to sold-out crowds on the back lot of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Adam and his team gave back to the community by donating 25% of the food after each lunch service, serving over 1,000 meals each week to local charities such as P.A.T.H. and L.A.C.E.R and volunteering at the LA Mission. As Adam establishes more culinary ventures, he remains dedicated to helping those in need wherever his barbecue adventures take him. Of special note, Adam previously won the American Royal’s World Series of Barbecue Pork Category contest in 2005.
In 2012, the American Royal officially became the home of the Barbecue Hall of Fame®. The first induction ceremony for the Barbecue Hall of Fame at the American Royal included the following three inductees:
Guy Fieri – host of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives on the Food Network (Celebrity/Humanitarian Category)
Johnny Trigg – known as the “Godfather of Barbecue” and one of the featured personalities on Destination America’s hit barbecue show the BBQ Pitmasters (Pitmaster Category)
Henry Ford – manufacturer of the charcoal briquette that ultimately became Kingsford Charcoal Company (Business/Industry Category)
Previous inductees to the Barbecue Hall of Fame include recognizable and notable figures in barbecue history, including: Rich Davis, Fred Gould, Speed Herrig, Mike Mills, Carolyn Wells, Gary Wells and John Willingham.
